There is just something special about the Christmas tree that is overflowing with handmade Christmas ornaments. Maybe it is the glitter, maybe the memories or maybe it is the personal touch that a handmade Christmas ornament can bring. After redoing our stockings, I was in the mood to DIY it all!
This DIY photo Christmas ornament will ad the perfect touch to your family’s Christmas tree. These are perfect to keep and hang or are the perfect DIY Christmas ornaments to give as gifts.
I love how the pictures seem to be surrounded by twinkling lights and are almost glowing. Add some glitter to this simple DIY ornament and you have a winner!
Supplies for your Handmade Christmas Photo Ornament:
- Wooden Photo Frame (I got the snowflake at Hobby Hobby)
- Acrylic Paint
- Glitter
- Small (1x2inch) Head shot photo that will fit in frame when cut out
- Transparency paper
How to make Your Photo Ornament
Once you have all of your supplies, start out by taking the backing and photo cover out of the snowflake frame.
Take your plain wooden frame and paint it with acrylic paint in whatever styles and colors you would like. If this is being used as a gift from kids, have them paint and decorate the frames themselves.
Once your frame is painted, add a little bit of glitter by sprinkling it on to the wet paint. Glitter will give it some extra sparkle when it is hanging on the tree.
Trace a Circle on the Transparency Film
Using the wood backing, trace another circle onto the transparency paper. This will be the new back of your frame.
Cut out your Photo
Make sure your photo will fit in the frame opening and cut out the head on the image.
Assemble your Handmade Photo Ornament
Once you have all of the pieces ready, it is time to assemble them. Place the transparency sheet into the frame from the back so it will be the new plastic photo cover.
Next, place the photo face down on the transparency so it looks like it is floating in the frame from the front. You can also add a little glitter if you want.
Finally, add the clear plastic piece to the back. This will suspend everything in place. Fold the metal prongs over the plastic sheet to hold everything in place.
Conclusion
And now you should have a handmade Christmas ornament that is perfect for your family’s Christmas tree and will be enjoyed for many years to come. I made these last year and I loved them! The kids had fun decorating them and now the grandparents have a unique DIY Christmas ornament to enjoy!
