Halloween is almost here and that means it is time for two of my favorite things; dressing up and decorating! I have written a few articles about our amazing Halloween decorations like these heads in jars or creating an amazing witches lair, but only one so far on making costumes. Since this is my other favorite part of Halloween, here is a tutorial on how to make your own Rainbow Brite costume! This is such a fun project to do with your family, and homemade is always better!
Every year, I make or revamp a costume to suite it to my own style. In 2015, I was Rainbow Brite! (80s girl!! I also still have all of my My Little Ponies!) Here is a picture of her for those who are unfamiliar with who she is:
I was actually a little bit surprised with how many people (both older and younger) haven’t heard of Rainbow Brite. I guess you just had to have been born at the right time to be blessed with one of the greatest shows ever!
How to make a Rainbow Brite Costume
I usually start at a thrift store for the base of the costume. I found a nice blue shiny sleeveless dress that was a little too big, (I added a few stitches in the back of it to make it a little tighter) but I decided to make it work. I also found a stretchy red belt that tightened up the waist (I was pretty lucky with this one as the belt was big and red and sparkly just like I wanted.) I ordered two pairs rainbow socks, one for my feet and another for my arms. I cut the foot off of the arm socks and had an instant rainbow sleeve.
And I just found this on Amazon, if you would like to skip cutting up socks:
I also found some suspenders to attach to the belt and a pretty rainbow pin for the Rainbow emblem (which I pinned to the Rainbow belt). I also found some comfy red shoes.
Here is everything I pieced together for my DIY Rainbow Brite Costume:
For Rainbow’s hair, I used a long blonde wig and a blonde clip in ponytail to get some awesome volume. I completed the look by sticking a metallic star sticker on my cheek. (The kind for kids chore charts)

I hope I inspired you to create something yourself for Halloween and be unique! Also check out this awesome Princess Peach costume! If you make a costume, use #bathtubart on Instagram so we can check it out! I can’t wait to see all of your cool ideas!
This next year, I am getting to be pretty pregnant for Halloween, so I’m not sure what I can pull off. Any clever ideas for a DIY maternity costume?
